The Never-Ending Quest for Perfection
In my previous post, I solved the “wobbly wheel” problem that was scratching my epoxy floor.
I thought I was done. But as a “clumsy old technician,” I just can’t leave things alone. Once the cart rolled smoothly, I noticed another mess: The Chaos inside the trays.
Bulky tools like drills and heat guns take up too much space. They bury small tools like wrenches and pliers, making them hard to find. It was inefficient and annoying.
My Solution: Kick the bulky tools OUT of the trays.
The “Bathroom” Epiphany
I needed an external hanger. I looked at professional “Drill Holsters,” but they were expensive and bulky.
Then, I saw something hanging in my bathroom: A Hair Dryer Holder.
“Wait… if it holds a hair dryer, why not a heat gun? Why not a drill?”
I immediately went to AliExpress and bought a few of these Spiral Aluminum Hair Dryer Holders.
- Material: Aluminum (Soft enough to bend, strong enough to hold)
- Price: Very affordable (Costs next to nothing)
- Design: Spiral shape (Perfect for gun-shaped tools)
The Custom Mount (The “Tech” Part)
Before we get into the details, check out the video below. It shows the entire fabrication process!
(Seeing is believing! Watch how I turned scrap metal and bathroom wire into a custom tool rack.)
Simply screwing them onto the thin metal of the cart wouldn’t be sturdy enough. Plus, I needed to replace the original screwdriver holder I was removing.
So, I raided my scrap bin and found a piece of 40×40 Square Pipe.
- Base: I used the square pipe as a sturdy base.
- Mounting: I attached the hair dryer holders to the pipe.
- Bonus: I drilled extra holes into the top of the pipe to hold screwdrivers (keeping the original function!).
- Installation: I used the original bolt holes from the cart handle, so no new holes were needed in the cart body.
Bending to Fit
The best part about these holders is the material. Since they are made of thick aluminum wire, you can bend them to fit the specific shape of your tools.
I tweaked the spirals to grip my cordless drill and heat gun perfectly. They fit like a glove.
The Result: Organized Bliss
It works beautifully.
The tools are now easy to grab, and the trays are free for smaller items. The structure is solid, and thanks to the cheap holders, the whole project cost less than a decent lunch.
If your tool cart is a mess, look at your bathroom accessories. The solution might be staring at you.
I’ll be back with another update if I find something else to tweak.
